WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

OLD-FASHIONED FROCKS AT

METHVEN

The highlight of the last meeting of the Methven Women’s Institute was a parade of old-fashioned frocks. Sixteen costumes had been procured by Mrs H. Ayers, the oldest being 75 years old and included wedding frocks and four party frocks, complete with fans, reticules and smellingsalts. Ancient and modern cyclists were depicted by two members, who rode into the hall at the commencement of the parade. To conclude the entertainment grandma and grandpa, dressed for bed in garments of long ago, received much applause. Four lady members of the Choral Society sang appropriate songs and led carol singing. There was an attendance of 67 members, as well as many children. The president (Mrs S. M. Jackman) presided.

It was reported that the Methven Girl Guides Troop and Brownie Pack had been revived.

Congratulations were tendered to Mrs L. - Vaughan on gaining full marks for a knitted cardigan in the bay competition at Ashburton. Mrs Jackman thanked all who had helped to make that occasion a success.

A picnic trip to Timiaru on January 20 has been arranged and already 40 members have handed in their names, and it is expected that many others will go. Games were won by Mrs A. C. Watson and Mrs M. Barclay. Competitions resulted: Bloom, Mrs F. Carr 1, V. Wright 2, G. Walsh 3; bowl of white flowers, Mrs R. Ireland 1, Mrs S. M. Jackman 2, Mrs J. M. Dolan 3; mixed flowers, Mrs V. Wright 1, Mrs R.
