REPRESENTATIVE MATCH
Canterbury to Play
Ashburton
GAME ON OVAL TO-MORROW A strong Canterbury cloven will play the Ashburton senior representative team in the final match of the season at the Oval to-mor-row. The junior representatives will play a Christchurch City and suburban team on the Tekau ground. The Canterbury team ”is the strongest selected to play Ashburton this season, and will be keen to wipe off the stigma of the defeat of the two Canterbury Colts’ teams earlier in the season.
R. W. G. Emery, West Christchurch, Canterbury and Auckland representative all-rounder, will lead the Canterbury team, which contains some outstanding batsmen in P. O’Malley, F. P. O’Brien, R. T. Dowker and W. Burton. O’Malley is well-known for his: performances as opening bat in the Plunket Shield series and, F. P. O’Brien is a brilliant hard hitting batsman who has played professional cricket in England and is a former New 'Zealand representative. Dowker has made some splendid scores in Ghristchurch club cricket this season. Good Attack Mahoney is a lion-hearted fastinedium bowler, and will be the spearhead of the Canterbury attack. He bowls an immaculate length and ia very hard to score off. Candlish is a good slow bowler, and if the wicket assists him at all, will be dangerous. Lohrey, fast-medium, and Emery, medium pace, are also useful bowlers and the Canterbury attack will be much superior to that of the Colts’ t GRILLS t Ashburton is fielding the strongest, side available, and has been unbeaten this season. Hamilton, Ashworth, Gosnell and Jordan are all excellent batsmen who have proved themselves in representative cricket this season, and Price, Doig and Griffiths are also sound players capable of getting amongst the runs. Wall and Robertson are hard-hitters and very useful performers who have filled the sixth and seventh positions in the batting order with distinction. Both are fast scorers, and have proved their worth this season, Robertson on the West Coast and Wall on the Ovdl and at Timaru. Ashburton have a strong batting side, but their attack is not so impressive. Wall, Ashworth and Jordan are useful medium-pace bowlers and Moore and Harper good slow bowlers, on their day. The Ashburton bowling is inclined to be erratic, but if Moore fiinds form he should worry the Canterbury batsmen. The attack will need to be backed by good fielding. Whatever the outcome, the stage seems set for an interesting day’s cricket.
