COOK ISLANDS

ARRIVAL OF POLICE CHANGES ATMOSPHERE (P.A.) AUCKLAND, This Day. “The arrival of police by air from Auckland on March 6 changed the whole atmosphere,” said Mr Lester Cook, treasurer of the Cook Islands Administration, who arrived by air for hospital treatment of a war injury. He said that Rarotonga had exhausted supplies of many essential commodities when the Wairuna left in February without having unloaded her cargo because of picketing by wharf labourers. Following the arrival of the police the day before the Wairata came, a meeting of members of the Cook Islands Progressive Association was held and the police chief was accorded a good reception. Talk of picketing the Wairata dropped, and the racial element talked peace. However, all members refused to answer the call for labour, and the Wairata Was worked by the crew, but only after establishing contact with the Federation of Labour in Wellington.
