CHAMPIONS FOUND

SOUTH ISLAND TOURNAMENT (P.A.) DUNEDIN, March 29. Four of the major . events of the South Island lawn tennis championship tournament were completed today, when, play was continued in fine weather before a large gallery at Logan Park. A stiff north-west wmo made accurate positional work difficult at times. Both / the _ men’s and women’s doubles and singles were completed and the mixed doubles was taken into the quarter-finals and will be completed to-morrow. , The victory of J. E, Robson (Otago) in the men’s singles was not unexpected, although his opponent, O. Bold (Wellington),' has been playing good tennis. When two players know each other’s style .well it is to be expected that their play in a deciding match will be cautious, and that was the position. Bold held Robson well in the first set which produced some excellent tennis, but in the second set he tailed off badly and Robson did not appear to bo fully extended. The wind affected the play of both men. Robson and Bold made an unbeatable team in the men’s doubles, although J. W. Paterson and J. C. Robertson played a strong and steady game arid began the second set particularly well. Miss M. Robertson (Otago) used telling drop shots, a steady drive and sound court sense to score a victory over Miss L. Barrett, the Invercargill representative, in the final of the women’s singles. Miss Barrett put up a good showing but appeared to be tiring toward the end of the • second set. *

Miss Mavis Kerr, who had been forded to drop out of the because, of an injury which she received playing in the north recently, partnered Mrs J. Adams (Invercargill) in a well-merited doubles victory.' In spite of the physical handicap of a plastercast which covered her left wrist and injured finger Miss Kerr showed good form, although it was obvious that her style was affected. Mrs Adams played, a particularly smooth game and took advantage of errors into which Miss M. Robertson was led by her hard hitting. Miss L. Barrett was playing an even game, but some placing was spoiled by the wind. Results •
