DOLLAR CRISIS
MR CHIFLEY WARNS AUSTRALIANS (Rec. 11.0) MELBOURNE, This Day. “For a long time the people of this country will have to go without things which are imported from dollar countries,” said Mr J. B*.Chifley, in an address to the Easter conference of the Victorian branch of the Labour Party “It is no use thinking that.in six. or 12 months or three years at the minimum that the dollar crisis will pass away,’, ’he said. “It is stark reality to-day that the United Kingdom .is fighting a grim battle for its economic existence. The Federal Government feels that the people of this country must give to ,the United Kingdom every possible assistance. I cannot over-emphasise the importance of increasing production now to safeguard Australia’s economy. There are people who think that by not doing their best they are cheating the boss, cheating the Government, or even cheating me. The less they do the more they retard production and deprive someone else of the things lie or she needs.”
