Taps Sometimes Run Dry GIRLS’ HOSTEL DRAWS ON THE LEITH (P.A.) DUNEDIN, March 17. With the city still ivell filled with centennial visitors, Dunedin is faced with its most serious water shortage for years. Unless supplies are improved soon the shortage will become critical. • Pressure is reduced to a minimum practically throughout the day 'and manufacturers, business firms, bakers, butchers, and others are finding difficulty in carrying ou. Milk treatment stations, which require large quantities of water for cleaning and cooling, are particularly affected. The supply of milk to schools, has had to be stopped. Hospitals, too, are troubled. To provide enough water for each day, hospitals are storing enough in the early hours Avhen taps are running to see them through the next 24 hours. Some dentists finding their taps dry have had to stop work at times. Hotels and restaurants are finding it hard to get dishes washed* One girls’ hostel has had bucket brigades carrying supplies from the Avaters of the Leith ,a stream which itself is shrinking because of the drought.

PETROL FOR METHVEN SHOW TRANSPORT OF, EXHIBITS Mr J. F. Stone stated to-day that petrol will be made available to intending exhibitors at the Methven ShQAv, to bring their exhibits to the show if no other means of transport is available. Judges who have no other means of transport Avill also be provided Avith petrol. Mr R. G. Gerard, M.P. for Ashburton, AA r ho has been making representations to the Oil Fuel Controller on behalf of the Methven A .and P. Association, this morning received the following telegram from the Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer: “In reference to your telegram regarding petrol for the Methven ShoAV, provided other transport is not available, the local controller Avill be authorised to grant special licences to enable exhibitors to transport exhibits; also for judges to attend.”
