FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Mar. 18, 1898). FareAvell Social—A most successful and enjoyable social Avas held in the Elgin School on Friday evening, for the purpose of saying farewell to Mr and Mrs Letham. The room was Avell filled by settlers of the surrounding district. Mr J. Cochrane occupied the chair, and ‘in proposing the toast of Mr and Mrs Letham referred to the many good qualities and the kindnesses shown by them. Messrs Protheroe and Choak also spoke on behalf of the committee. Other speakers Avere Messrs Bonifant, Paul, Bland, and Graves. Mr Letham briefly responded. An interval of songs and instrumental music Avas given by Misses Dalton, Protheroe and Smith, Messrs Hoatten, Pitt, Hunnibell, Lamb and Butterick.

The Water ToAver —The problem of painting the_ inside of the Avater tower without interfering with the water supply may. have seemed to many to be ail insurmountable one. The AvaterAvorks engineer (Mr G. Guild) proposes overcoming the difficulty by leaving about tAVo feet of Avater in the toAver Avhile the painting is being done doAvn to that le\'el. The water will then be run off and the tank allowed to dry, after which the remaining tAvo feet of plating will be painted. While the toAver is without water the mains Avill be kept full by pumping -direct into them from the power-house. It is considered that the neAv paint will not taint tlie Avater to any noticeable or harmful extent.
