HOCKEY

ASHBURTON MATCHES FRIENDLY GAMES FOR MEN Friendly matches were played in the Domain on Saturday by teams of the Ashburton Men’s Hockey SubAssociation. • Results were as follow: Lane, Walker, Rudkin G, Ashburton 2; Technical Old Boys 4, Wakanui A 4; Baring Square 5, Wakanui B 1. Saturday’s play took the form of, a field day. While some , enjoyable matches were played, owing to the soft naturef of the field there was a tendency to unintentionally undercut the ball, causing it to rise rather dangerously. Lane, Walker, Rudkin C, Ashburton 2. L.W.R., fielding a stronger team than they did in their last game, were right on top of their form and maintained a good pace throughout, showing the value of nightly practices. Some good passing was seen amongst the forwards with Le Compte always in the van of the attack, while Jackson at centre-half was a. constant source of trouble to the opposing side. Weeks, Gimson and Moore were the mainstays of Ashburton’s team which included a number of young new players, and should do better when these have had more experience. Drawn Match Technical Old Boys 4, Wakanui A 4. This was an exceptionally fast and willing game but was marred by too much hard hitting and obstructional play. In the first half Technical forwards were attacking fiercely and only very good backing up by the Wakanui halves and backs kept the score against them down to three. Wakanui after a couple of breakaways down the field netted a goal and at half-time the score read Technical 3, Wakanui 1. Shortly after the spell D. McCrea received a hit on the head from a rising ball and had to retire from the game and Technical Old Boys, with only ten men, went on to the defensive. Wakanui were now pressing very hard and the centre-forward scored nicely from two penalty corners to equalize. Each side netted another goal and the run of play varied until the final whistle. Baker was the outstanding back on the field, both goalkeepers made some good saves while Harper, Anderson and Sinclair showed good form in the forwards, though the latter frequently obstructs due to ’the fact that he is a left-handed player. Technical’s goals were from the sticks of Mason, R. McCrea, Harper and Thomson, while Anderson and Sinclair obtained two each for Wakanui. < Baring Square 7, Wakanui B 1. Baring Square were much too good for the set of young players comprising Wakanui’s second team, the score being a fair indication of the play. Gosnell in goal for Baring Square ably assisted by Penman at full-back managed to repel most of the attacks, while their forwards led by Beauvais and Olliver worked hard to run up a seven goal total. It is to be expected that the Wakanui seniors will take their keen new players in hand and it will be interesting to note their progress throughout the season. N
