ST. JAMES THEATRE One of the most original and suspenseful mystery plays to reach the screen via radio, is “The Whistler, which is one of the features at the St. James Theatre to-night. The story deals with 4he experience of a man who is morbid over the fear that his friendp suspect him of collaborating in his wife’s death by drowning, and hires a prqfessional killer to murder him. The killer is an expert, always commits his crimes in a different way. This time he hits on the idea of murdering by psychology, thus avoiding the use of any incriminating weapon. The rest of the picture deals with the ’killer’s attempts to frighten his victim to death. In this process, he does pot leave the audience untouched. The other feature on the programme is the bright musical hit, “Song of the Open Road,” which- has in its cast Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy, W. C. Fields, Jane Powell, Reginald Denny, Bonita Granville and many others. The singing of Jane Powell is a highlight of the production. The serial will also be shown to-night. Saturday’s Attractions • The special programme at the matinee on Saturday afternoon at the St. James Theatre will be headed by “Cadets on Parade,” the story of two boys of different types who meet on the road to manhood. The supports will include a comedy, the serial and two cartoons. Saturday night’s attraction will be Warner Bros.’ power-pack-ed drama “The Hard Way,” with Ida Lupino, John Garfield and Joan Leslie in the starring roles.
