BAND CONTEST
TO BE HELD IN ASHBURTON PRELIMINARY ARRANGEMENTS MADE On receipt of official advice from the Canterbury Provincial Bands’ Association to the effect that the Oamaru Garrison Band Avould compete, the Ashburton Band Contest Committee decided at a recent meeting to hold a contest on October 12. The chairman (Mr T. LeAvitt) presided over a good attendance, and good progress Avas made Avith preliminary arrangements. It Avas decided to hold a street parade, the winning band to receive £3 3 s-. The sum of £ls Avas voted to the Art Union for contest funds, necessary details for which have been arranged. Six medals, four gold and two silver Avere donated by Messrs A. Grant (two), G. BoAvman, C. H. F. Maynard, H. Addis and L. L. Aitken. Mr E. C. Bathurst donated £2 toivard the art union. Messrs T. A. Bryant, BoAvman and W. H. Amos and the Ashburton Silver Band volunteered as guarantors for £lO each. Catering will be dealt with in the R.S.A. Club rooms, Avomen members of the Citizens’ Committee and the Auxiliary of the R.S.A., having volunteered to assist. It Avas decided to invite the following to act as military judges: Majors A, W. White and H. Montgomery, Captains C. C. Werry and .E. J. Wood and Sergeant-Major C. Y. Wilson. Appointments made were: Marshal, Mr J. R. Wilkie; time-keepers, Messrs Bowman and Grant; pacer, Mr L. Aitken; inspector of instruments, Mr J. Russell. Advice Avas received from the Association that Mr J. Dixon, of Dunedin, had been appointed musical judge and Mr R. B. Hean, of Christchurch, supervisor. The Ashburton Silver Band donated £2 2s for prizes for the best essay on the contest written by a primary school boy and girl. Mr W. CraAvford will be the judge. _. , , It Avas suggested that coloured lights be erected in the town during the Aveek before the contest.
