DESTROYER MISSES TARGET
TUG HIT INSTEAD (Rec. 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, August 26. H.M.S. St. James, while at target practice off Portland Bill, missed the target towed by the tug, H.M.S. Buccaneer, but hit and sank the Buccaneer. A sand-filled dummy round passed through the tug’s engineroom, missing the stokers by inches. The Buccaneer’s after bulkhead collapsed, and the pumps were rendered useless. The St. James tried to help with her own pump, but the tug settled, and the crew were taken off safely.
