“CLOSED SHOP”
ACTION BY TRANSPORT BOARD (Rec. 12.10 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 26. The London Passenger Transport Board, which operates all public transport for 2000 square miles of Greater London, has declared a “closed shop” for its staff of 50,000. The Board stated that it had decided not to employ workers in certain grades operating maintenance departments unless they are members of the Transport and General Workers’ Union. The Board revealed that a number of employees joined a. union called the National Passenger Workers’ Union. Members of the staff who are members of the Transport and General Workers’ Union refused to work with them.
The Board aclded: “The present arrangement under which drivers and conductors who are members of the National Passenger Workers’ Union continued on the payroll, although not allowed to work, will cease.”
