RAILWAYS TO MEET CHALLENGE (Rec. 12.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The challenge of airlines in New South Wales is to be met by the railways with new 70-mile-an-liour Diesel trains, rail motors and rail motor trailers. The' Commissioner of Railways, Mr T. J. ITartigan, has authorised the construction of modern equipment valued at £1,415,000 which, he says, will be in operation within 18 months. Within six weeks the first of the new converted oil-burning engines will he in service. One hundred coal-burners will be converted because of the shortage of fuel., Mr Hartigan does not fear air com-* petition because he believes that the bulk of the people will travel by rail for many years to come.
