ECHO OF RECOVERY OF GOLD HOARD
(Rec. 11 a.m.) SINGAPORE, Aug. 22 A British captain, J. B. D. Williams, was cashiered and sentenced to one year’s hard labour for converting to his. own use property which should have been turned over to the Army authorities. Williams was assistant - provost marshal in Batavia during field security raids which recovered part ot a hoard of gold and jewels estimated to be worth £l,-500.000 sterling, which a Japanese, Colonel Nakamura, stole when Japan surrendered. The Dutch Government will try several Dutch civilians on charges arising out of the handling of the hoard.
