SLIGHT INCREASE
HOLIDAY RAILWAY BOOKINGS PERIOD OF NINE DAYS An increase of 217 in sales of tickets for the holiday period is shown by figures supplied by the Ashburton railway station. From December 23 To January 1, inclusive, 1899 tickets were sold, compared with 1682 for the same period last year. On Christmas Eve there was an increase of 217, but this could be due to the fact that last year the 24t,h was ou a Sunday. Last Sunday only one ticket was sold, against 192 for the 23rd of the previous December, which was a Saturday.
A large number travelled from Ashburton yesterday to attractions in other centres, 295 tickets for Timaru and 134 for Christchurch being sold. The total, however, was about 70 less than on the previous New Year’s Day. This was probably the effect of the increase in the petrol ration for motorists. Details, compared with those for the previous year, are:
