LOOKING BACK
FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Jan. 2,189 G). Elgin Picnic —The annual treat in connection with the Elgin School was held in the school grounds on Monday, December 23, when there was a great gathering of children, parents and friends. After an excellent lunch, sports were held. Toward evening tea was served and prizes given to every child. Altogether a very enjoyable day was spent and everyone was pleased.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

Old Year Dies —The occasion of the passing of the old year and the birth of the new was celebrated by a large crowd in town on New Year’s Eve. Tlie streets were unusually gay and there were sounds of unwantoned mirth and jollity. The usual concourse of small boys in unrestrained festive mood, pervaded the main thoroughfares with the accompaniment of bombs, crackers and rockets, while tho older people Indulged in the pleasant diversion of simulating extreme youth with the aid of raucous trumpets and squeaker balloons.
