PLANE CRASHES
NOTED AIRMAN KILLED (Rec. 1.30 p.m.). MELBOURNE, This Day. Six Australian airmen were killed when an aircraft crashed while taking off from Labuan airstrip last week. One of the victims was Group Captain Lyle Tolswich, who commanded the famous “No. 13’’ Squadron which flew Hudsons with spectacular gallantry against superior Japanese numbers during the Malaya campaign. The plane had taken off and was a few feet from the ground when it hit two Mustangs parked in bays just off the runway.
