RELUCTANT TO GO

RATEPAYERS’ REPRESENTATIVES

COUNCIL IN COMMITTEE Two of the three representatives of the Ashburton Ratepayers’ Association who attended the meeting of the Borough Council last evening showed disinclination to leave when requested by the Mayor to do so when the Council went into committee.

The Council held over certain business until the end of the meeting and went into committee to deal with it.

Mr W. P. Halliburton, one of the thrte representatives, then left, but Messrs A. B. Thomas and J. Hepburn remained. When the Mayor asked them to leave, Mr Thomas said representatives of the newspapers should leave as well.

Again requested by the Mayor to leave, both men hesitated for a few moments, and then complied, Mi' Thomas remarking as he went out that they would be back. They did not, however, return.

“It lias not been our practice to exclude reporters when we go into committee, but I shall ask them to leave if you wish,” said the Mayor.

None of the councillors had any comment to make, and the matter was taken no further.
