Second-Lieutenant W. Brick, of Highbank, relinquishes the temporary rank of Lieutenant and assumes the rank of Acting-Lieutenant in the N.Z. Infantry, states the latest Gazette.

Captain W. R. Lane, of Ashburton, has been promoted from -temporary to permanent rank of Major in the N.Z. Medical. Corps, states the latest Gazette.

Letters of cheer were directed by the Borough Council last evening to Messrs H. W. Sherratt and J. H. Browne, both of whom were absent on account of illness.

Mr I. H. Watson was last evening appointed by the Borough Council to the position of assistant in the office of the engineer. There were five applications. Mr Watson will commence his activities on January 3.

Miss J, Loy was last evening appointed by the Borough Council to the position of assistant librarian at the Ashburton Municipal Library. Thero were nine applicants. Miss Loy will commence her duties: on December 27.

Major D. G. Wallace, of Ashburton, is to be Lieutenant-Colonel in the New Zealand Medical Corps, states the latest Gazette. He is granted the acting rank of Colonel, and is appointed Office!- Commanding Troops, No. 1 N.Z. hospital ship Maunganui.

The Mayor (Mr E. C. Bathurst) was nominated by the Borough Council last evening to represent the Canterbury Boroughs on the executive of the South Island Local Bodies’ Association. Last year the representative was Mr A. E. S. Hanan (Mayor of Timaru) who has become a member of the executive by virtue of his office.

The appointment of Dr. W. J. Bornman to the position of headmaster of the Ashburton East School in place of Mr S. G. Macfarlane. who is- retiring, was approved at the last meeting of the Canterbury Education Board. Other appointments approved were o f Mr R. A. Macartney at the Borough School and Miss O. B, Lawn at Rakaia.

Mr C. Wilson, who has rejoined the clerical staff of the Borough Council after discharge from the Air Force, was welcomed by the Council and its staff last evening. Mr Wilson’s stay in Ashburton will, however, be short, as the Council last evening accepted his resignation, he having accepted the position of Town Clerk at Motuelca. '

Mr A. Thomson, who has been for 25 years on-the outside staff of the Borough Council, resiged last evening. At the supper which followed the meeting he was presented by the Mayor with a framed photograph of himself and his horse and dray from Mr H. W. Sherratt. Mr Thomson, who is 78, has become a familiar figure in Ashburton during his period of service with the Couhcil.
