ROBBER BANDS.
LAWLESSNESS IN AUSTRIA. (Rec. 11.5 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 22. An outbreak' of lawlessness ap|ong displaced persons in North-east Austria menaces the security of the civilian population and military personnel travelling to and from Czechoslovakia, says the correspondent of the Exchange Telegraph Agency in Vienna. There are more than 500,000 displaced persons in the central States who are receiving no food rations so that they are compelled to rob and murder in order to exist. Austrian peasants have appealed to the Austrian Government for protection, but the police force is inadequate. The Government has asked the Russian military authorities to intervene, but they so far have not taken action. The Austrians established a patrol of 10 to 12 men in the border areas, but this is inadequate because the lawlessness spreads over a wide area. Robber bands who are Avell armed frequently hold up supply- vehicles travelling between Prague and Vienna. Numerous cases of rape have been reported.
