ASHBURTON TOWN CLOCK.
Sir. —Your readers will no doubt have noticed that strenuous endeavours are being made by the residents of Sydenham for the retention of their town clock, which is in exactly the same category as our town clock in that it was erected with funds raised by public subscriptions, and that it does not stand in an area affected by earthquake tremors. If throughout the years the construction of the Post Office building has weakened, surely something can be done to strengthen the structure instead of removing the clock, thus robbing the residents of the Borough and County of this lifelong indispensable asset. I wonder what would happen to “Big Ben” under similar circumstances? I hope that our local authorities and all residents will still continue to protest against the destruction of our clock, and I urge all to watch the fate of the Sydenham clock. J. W. BOWDEN.
