SEVERAL ACCIDENTS.

FOOTBALLERS RECEIVE INJURY , BOY’S HANDS BURNT. Members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade Avere kept fully occupied at the Ashburton Rugby Union’s competitions on Saturday. Of nine players who left the.field six were, treated as out-patients at tile Public Hospital. They included Raymond Wallace (Methven) with injuries to his back received playing against Technical Old Boys, and Lloyd Ashton (Mayfield) with injuries to his, knee received when playing for Methven in the same game. Steven Cone (Tinwald) received a cut on his forehead from the artificial denture of another player, necessitating two stitches. Others were Owen McDowell (Anama), Keith Plunkett (Ashburton) playing for High School and Trevor Hume (Ashburton). The ambulance was on. the ground. . A narrow escape from serious injury was experienced last week by Thomas Stapleton, aged 11, son of Mr and Mrs T. Stapleton, Lauriston, when a kerosene heater he was trimming exploded, setting fire to the washhouse. After the fire had been extinguished by Mrs Stapleton with the help of neighbours, it was discovered that the boy’s hands had been burned. He was taken to the Lauriston store, where he was attended to. He Avas brought into the Ashburton Public Hospital yesterday. His condb tion to-day Avas reported to be satisfactoi’y. Suffering from a fractured femur received Avhen he fell, over a loav fence, James William Wallace, a*farmer, of Highbank, aged 63, Avas admitted to the Ashburton Public Hospital on Saturday. He Avas reported to-day to be progressing favourably.
