MANPOWER POSITION.

MID-CANTERBURY DISTRICT. FREEZING WORKS AND SHEARING. “Compared with other freezing works throughout the country, the Fairfield works are in a fairly satisfactory position regarding manpower,” said the district agent of the National Service Department (Mr J. B. Pearson) this morning. There are only one or two vacancies —in the fellmongery and .freezing departments With the shortage of feed, lambs are being sent in large quantities, and the yearly rush is being experienced. The position regarding the shortage of blade shearers for the hack-country has improved considerably. Within the last few days arrangements to supply shearers from North Canterbury and elsewhere have been made by the National Service Department. It is understood that most requirements have been fulfilled. Shearing on the plains is almost finished, but in the back-country the weather has brought all the shearing in at the same time, causing an urgent demand for shearers.
