NEW MILL BURNT.

CORNFLOUR STOCKS DESTROYED, (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 25. Fire gutted the factory of Provita Mills, Ferry Road, early this afternoon. Stocks and machinery valued at between £BOOO and £9OOO were desti*oyed, and only the' brick walls of the building remain. The factory Avas carrying abnormally large stocks, including a consignment of cornflour for the North Island. Production had only recently been commenced with a new American system for producing cornflour, which was expected to treble the factory’s output. Special temperature recording instruments and other valuable Continental and American machinery were also a total loss.

The fire started in the drying duct in the cornflour plant and, fanned by a strong south-west wind, soon gained a good hold .on the building. The insurances on the stock and machinery ai*e not expected to cover the loss.
