SOLDIERS BREAK INTO CANTEEN. TIMARU, This Day. Brian Waito Turnbull, miner and soldier, aged 22, and Desmond Frederick Stokes, aged 21, labourer and soldier, who had pleaded guilty in the Court at Ashburton, appeared for sentence yesterday before Mr Justice Northcroft, on a charge that at a military ramp on July 20. 1940, they had broken into a canteen by day with intent to commit a crime. Turnbull said they had only gone into the building to extinguish the light, and Stokes explained that he had been on picket for 10 days and had gone in and out of the building which was not; then in use.
