NORTHERN MAORIS.
MR H. K. PAIKEA LIKELY. (P.A.) WHANGAREI, April 28. Three hundred Maoris attending an unveiling ceremony decided to support the nomination of Mr H. K. Paikea for the Northern Maori seat in the vacancy caused by the death of the Hon. P. K. Paikea. The suggested nominee is a brother-of the late Minister, and is a farmer in the Batley district. In order to avoid a by-election in the Northern Maori electorate negotia-tions-were proceeding to approach the Paikea family to nomiriate a candidate, said Mr E. T. Tirikatene, M.P , presenting a report of the Labour Party Maori Advisory Committee at the -Labour Party conference in Wellington to-night. The reason for this, he said, was the confidence of the Maoris in the Government. Mr Tirikateno dealt with the Maoris’ war effort, and rehabilitation, and thanked the Government for setting up Maori war effort committees throughout the country, which had been a substantial contribution! toward achieving unity .among the Maori people. The conference carried a resolution expressing thanks to the Maoris for their support of the party and also made appreciative reference to the • magnificent achievements of the Maori troops overseas and in New Zealand.
