WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.

tHE I.OWCUFFE MEETING. There was a good attendance at the April meeting of the Lbwclilfo Women' s Institute, presided over by the'president (Miss Tait). A letter was received-from a local soldier expressing thanks ’ for parcels received Miss Tait was elected delegate in the event of a South Island Conference being held at Christchurch. Arrangements were made for the birthday party on May 29. Mesdames L. Bain and E. Hawlce reported on the aiihual meeting of the Mid-Canterbury Federation. Mrs McRae was congratulated on her re-elec-tion as president. The roll call, f ‘A book I have read,” proved very interesting, as also was a Golden Thread .talk, “The story of. Madame Chiang* Kai-shek.” Competitions resulted :—Sewing, Mrs Price 1, Mrs T./’Hawke 2, Mesdames R. Hawke and Reddecliffe’ '(eqhal) 3; knitting, Mrs Mcßae 1, Miss Chalmers2, Mrs- ThQippson 3; bottled. If pit, peaches, Mrs Cross 1,-Mrs Price-2, Mrs Mcßae 3; ;apfioots,' Mrs -T.; Hawke 1, Miss Tait 2; bloom, Miss Tait 'T; spike, Miss Tait 1; 1 'cluster, Miss Tait 1.

The travelling shilling was won by Mrs Reddecliffe.

It was decided to revive the sales table at the monthly meetings.

It Was also decided to increase to £1 the donation to local prisoners-of-war parcels. Parcels were packed for local soldiers. Presentations were made to the retiring president and secretary.

THE MEETING AT ALLENTON. ' * ' w "■' r ' The monthly meeting of the Alienton Women’s Institute was held yesterday, the president (Mrs J. Southward) presiding'over a'large attendance. Two new members were welcomed. Mrs G. Harris read the Aspirations. The motto was: “Attend frequently, work together, pay promptly, and be good company.” The'roll call was: “The happiest part of the day.” Mrs Harris reported on the annual meeting of the Mid-Canterbury Federation.

Mrs Southward was appointed delegate to the South Island Conference to be held in Christchurch. A presentation was made to the retiring secretary (Miss M. Osborne). Mrs H. H.' Ferrier was appointed judge of the competitions. A vpte of thanks was passed to Mr R. J. Tucker for providing the Institute programmes.

Mr H. Millichamp gave an interesting garden talk, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Members handed in 32 handkerchiefs for a military hospital and also donated cakes for the patriotic ball and the next-of-kin social afternoon.

Competitions resulted. Bloom, Miss M. Osborne 1; truss, Mrs J, McElhinney 1; posy bowl, Miss J. Copland 1, Mrs MeElhinney 2, Mrs H. Greaves 3 ; handkerchief, Mrs Southward 1, Miss R. Douglas 2, Mrs Magson 3. The hostesses were Mesdames E. C. Bathurst, J. Boothroyd, C. Halo and Miss N. Upton.
