CLAIM BY ITALIANS.
AMERICAN BATTLESHIP SUNK. : <■ ' " HIT BY FOUR TORPEDOES. (Roc. 11.15 a.in.)- ROME, Oct, 6. The Rome Radio claims that an Italian submarine sank an American battleship of the Mississippi class about 300 miles west of the coast -of Africa abreast of Freetown, Sierra Leone. Four torpedoes, it is stated, hit the ship, which was seen to sink. The Navy Department at Washington declined to comment on the Italian claim.
