SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETS. The Ashburton East School Committee met last evening, when there Avere present Messrs W. S. Kerr (chairman), E. H>. Childs, N. Corbett. H.W. HayAvard, H. W. Cook, R. Gemmell, G. Fowke, J. K. Mather and the headmaster (Mr S. G.' Macfarlane). Correspondence was received from the Senior Dental Officer (Mr H. M. McCutcheon) advising that the Tinwaia dental sub-base AA’ill bo regarded as attached to the Ashburton west area. A circular giving details of grants to school dental committees Avas discussed. Mr Corbett reported that the repairs to the school asphalt had been completed. For the Visiting Committee, Messrs Fowke and Gemmell reported on work done in cleaning the grounds and stated that the repairs to the asphalt seemed very satisfactory. The headmaster reported that attendances were still affected by measles, mumps, and whooping cough, but had improved someAvliat in the last fortnight. Since the last report the school had been inspected by the recently-ap-pointed senior inspector of the Canterbury .district, (Mr S. J. Irwin). Mr IrAvin also addressed a meeting of the Mid-Canterbury Branch of the Institute. Mr McNeill, the Board’s foreman of works, had inspected the rooms to he done up, also the dental clinic room and the schoolhouse for painting. The girls’ musical festival had been set doAvn for November 12 at the Radiant Hall. The Avork of the \-arious choirs Avas Avell under way and a combined practice would be held shortly. The projector lamp had given out, but pupils were subscribing for a ugav one.

It was decided to thank the children for their subscriptions. It was agreed that further representations be made to the Education Board regarding the promised subsidy for the learners’ swimming pool. Messrs Hayward and Kerr were appointed a visiting committee.
