TEMPERANCE UNION.

THE ASHBURTON MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Ashburton Women’s Christian Temperance Union was very well attended, the president (MrsW. H. Robinson) presiding. Mrs Murray read as a. temperance fact a, statement from .a. paper of 40 years ago.

The president drew attention to the fact the large amount, raised by the Methodists and Union at their recent patriotic effort had !>oen achieved without raffles.

_ The reports on the District Convention held in Christchurch were read by the delegates .(Mrs Harwood and Mrs Buckler). They said that Ashburton had been, commended on its Band of Hope and the special interest taken in the work. An address had been given by the Rev. D. D. McLachlan. The following resolutions were passed by the Conference, stated the report: (1) This Convention strongly protests against the publication of the names of women and girls prosecuted under the Health Act Regulations dealing with venereal disease; (2) That more women police be appointed to give special attention to the supervision of parks, dance halls, public gatherings and streets in the evenings. The report concluded by announcing that the following officers for the South Canterbury district had been elected as follows:—President, Mrs W. H. Robinson ; vice-presklent, Mrs Cave (Timaru); secretary, Mrs Butler (Temuka); treasurer, Mrs McEwiug (Timaru).
