DANGER WARNINGS

PERIL NEAR AUSTRALIA. AIR STRENGTH OF JAPANESE THE RAIDING OF RABAT'D. (United Press Association—Copyright.) (Rec. 1.30) MELBOURNE, Jan. 21. An official Royal Australian Air Force communique issued to-night gives warning that, following the further heavy raids on Rabaul and the Bismarck Archipelago to-day, a major Japanese attack in that area is expected. In operations over the archipelago and along the northern coast of New Guinea the Japanese have displayed very considerable strength in shore based and carrier-borne aircraft, including flying-boats, fast fighters, and heavy bombers.

The Prime Minister (Mr J. Curtin) said to-night: “Anybody in Australia who fails to perceive the immediate menace to Australia which this attack constitutes must be lost to all reality. The peril is nearer, clearer, and deadlier than before.”
