AMERICAN SUPPLIES.

SOUTH-WEST PACIFIC PROGRESS WASHINGTON, Jan. 20. ,Mr Roosevelt said that supplies are being sent to the south-west Pacific and very excellent progress is being made to strengthen the position of the united nations there. The Lieutenant-Governor of the Netherlands Bast Indies (Dr. van Mook), after conferring with Mr Roosevelt, said that the President had given him a lot of good news regarding the effort to strengthen the Far East.

Dr. van Mook predicted that the Dutch would hold out in the Indies. “Real efforts are being made to get the necessary implements of war out there,” he added. The United States Secretary of State (Mr Cordell Hull) was asked at a press conference in Washington if he could make a statement on United States policy which would reassure the Dutch, the Chinese, and the Australians.

Mr Hull replied that he thought the responsible authorities in these countries would trust the United States to organise the best strategic plan of action in the Pacific. ,
