THE INDIAN OCEAN.
ENEMY SUBMARINE OPERATING. VESSEL TORPEDOED AND SUNK. LONDON, Jan. 20. The first evidence of an enemy submarine in the Indian Ocean was provided when a ship was torpedoed on the night of January 14, 270 miles off the west coast of Sumatra. Five of the crew were killed and four wounded. Seventy-seven passengers and crew took to the lifeboats. Th% submarine then sank the ship by shell fire. Two lifeboats were landed at Batu Island.
