OVERSEAS AIR MAIL.

CHANGE IN POSTAL RATES. WELLINGTON, .lan. 20. The iPostmaster-Gencral (the IHon. P. C. Webb) has announced that in consequence of the suspension of the trans-Pacific air service there is at present no air mail service to which the 5s fid and 4s rates apply. An, alternate service, however, has been provided for the dispatch of correspondence for the United Kingdom, Europe, Canada., and the United States. Air dispatch will he given over as great a portion of the distance as circumstances permit, the transit time to the United Kingdom under normal conditions being estimated at approximately 25 to 35 days. Rates for the new service are Letters for the United Kingdom and Europe, 3s 6d a. half-ounce ; for Canada and the United States, Is 3d a hallounce.

The Minister said that this service would provide the. host dispatch possible at present. No special superscription on the covers was necessary, but the articles must have the blue air mail labels. The new service' was additional to that under which surface transit to the United States and air transit across the Atlantic was available at 2s 6di a half-ounce. ,
