WOMEN’S HOCKEY.

DOUBLE WIN FOR ASHBURTON MATCHES WITH MALVERN Outstanding stick-work in the second half gave Ashburton a comfortable win by 6 goals to 2- in the senior women’s hockey match with Malvern at Ashburton on Saturday. Ashburton was also successful in the junior match, scoring two goals to their opponents one.

In the senior match Malvern attacked from the start, and opened the scoring when N. McKenzie netted. Ashburton equalled after some splendid work by P. Barnes, M. Henderson and J. Hawke, the latter scoring. A good return by 11. Donaldson set the Ashburton forwards in motion and a strong passing rush resulted in M. Henderson flicking the second goal. Ashburton 2, Malvern 1. From the bully Malvern penetrated into the Ashburton circle where a penalty was ruled against the goalkeeper, allowing T. Early to goal. The. halftime score was two all. Ashburton scored again when M. Henderson scored with a fine pushstroke after the ball had rebounded off the post. The speed of play was now increasing and Ashburton maintained the upper hand on defence. From a free hit Malvern took the ball to the Ashburton cil*cle,' but R. Donaldson cleared and played returned to the Malvern, twenty-five where T. Borgfeldt. centred and M. Bennison scored Ashburton’s fourth goal. A combined rush by J. Newman and M. Henderson resulted in the latter driving the ball home. Just before the whistle J Hawke added another goal making the filial score: Ashburton 6, Malvern 2. The umpires were Messrs Henderson (Malvern) and W. T. Corbett (Ashb-ur ton).

The Junior Match. In. a game which was played under difficulties because of the heavy ground and light drizzle, the Ashburton B team beat a second Malvern team by the narrow margin of two goals to-one. Ashburton opened the game by attacking bard. E. Dutton netting the first goal. After I. McKendry cleared from the Ashburton circle, J. Watson and N. Jewel took the ball downfield and passed to E. Dutton who netted, hut the goal was not allowed because she was off-side. Play was confined to. Malverp territory, but at half-time there was no further score. Ashburton had to clear several times after play was resumed, but it was not long before Malvern equalised, W. Niger scoring. With E.

Dutton and G. Owen prominent, Ashburton initiated a movement which resulted in J. Watson netting the winning goal. Messrs K. Orams (Ashburton) and McLauchlin (Malvern) were the umpires. In a junior competition match at Ashburton. Ashburton beat Methven B by 2 to 1.
