AN ARREST MADE.

THE WAITOTARA STORE MURDER YOUNG MAORI ACCUSED. - (P.A.) WANGANUI, August 6. Less than 36 hours after the start of widespread police inquiries and investigation, Detectives J. J. Murray* (Wanganui) and T. W. Allsop ■ (Hawera) arrested a Maori in Patea this evening. He will.be charged in the Magistrate’s Court at Patea tomorrow concerning the death of Arthur Haring Parkinson, aged 78, a storekeeper, of Waitotara. Accused is aged 27, married, and lives in the Waitotara district , Katene, who has two children, was found by detectives in a billiard saloon. The detectives asked him to go to the police station, where the arrest, was made. ACCUSED MAORI REMANDED. COURT REFUSES AN ORDER (P.A.) WANGANUI, This. Day. I Before a packed Court, the crowd including many Maoris, Tipi Katene, a native was charged before Justices in Patea to-day with the murder on August 4, of Arthur Harding Parkinson, 79-year-old Waitotara storekeeper. Detective T. W. Allsop asked for a remand to Wellington August 14 (next Thursday). Mr S. G. Cathro (Patea) appeared for Katene and, consenting to the remand, asked the Court to make an order that following the remand to Wei- ' lington Katene be remanded to appear at Wanganui, where counsel would have access to him. • The Court, consisting of Messrs E. * F. Hemingway and W. F. Shield, said - it was not prepared to make an order and remanded Katene to Wellington on August 14. Katene was taken to Wellington today, being escorted by Constable J. R. C. Smith , (Patea) and Constable L, Gordon (Eltham). Detectives J. Murray and Allsop, who made the arrest of Katene, are remaining in Patea to make further inquiries. . ;
