OBSTACLES ON LINES.

ACTION BY TWO ESCAPEES DESIRE TO DELAY PURSUIT (P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. With reference to the Dunedin, 'report that several iron fish- plates had been placed across the main railway line between Balclutha and Kakapuaka on Sunday, making additional precautions necessary for the safe passage of expresses using the line, the 1 Minister of Raihvays (the Hon. Ri. Semple) said to-day that his Department had made inquiries Avhich showed that two lads Avho had escaped from the Borstal Institution Avore travelling south along the railAvay line and under the impression that they Avould probably be pursued' by officials on velocipedes had put tAA’o or three fish plates on, the rail with a vieAV to delaying pursuit. The obstacles Avere removed and the lads were taken .into custody. The line was patrolled further to ensure that no other obstacles had been placed on the track.

Mr Semple said he made this statement in order to assure the public that there Avas no ground for thinking it Avas on ordinary act of sabotage carried out by some person resident in the' locality Avith a vieAV to derailing the express trains.
