SOLDIER HONOURED.
PRESENTATION AT LAURISTON. The Lauriston Soldiers! Memorial Hall was filled to capacity on Saturday evening, on the occasion c-f a social in honour of Private J. E. McKenzie. Visitors were present from Ashburton, Methven, Rakaia and surrounding districts. Music for dancing was provided by Cook’s Band (Lyndhurst), Mr A. C. Gadd being the Master of Ceremonies. The chairman of the Lauriston Soldiers’ Social Committee (Mr C. A. Fyfe), on behalf of the district, presented Private McKenzie with an inscribed wallet and contents, and an inscribed fountain pen. Mr Fyfe spoke in terms of the highest praise of the McKenzie family. Of the five sons, four were serving in the N.Z.E.F.
For the women of the district, Mrs W. Gimson handed to the guest* of honour a parcel of comforts, and wished him a speedy and safe return to New Zealand.
. Mr N. C. Robilliard (president of the Ashburton Rugby Union) praised Private McKenzie for the line contribution he had made to Rugby in the County. Mr W. E. Smith spoke on behalf ot the returned soldiers of the district, and Mr H. T. Crothers on behalf of the County.
