Privates Mervyn MoCVca, Cyril MeCrca and Norman Law, all of Highbank, have advised their safe arrival in Egypt from Greece and Crete.

Mr E. B. Newton (chairman of the Ashburton County Racing Club) will leave on Thursday for Wellington to attend the annual meeting of the Racing Conference.

Miss J. Barnett, who has been masseuse at the Ashburton Public Hospital for the last two years, has gone to Gisborne to take up a similar position: She was entertained by the sisters on the staff before leaving.

In appreciation of his services to Rugby football, the Ashburton Rugby Union last evening entertained Private J. E. McKenzie, a captain for several years of the Ashburton County representative team and a former member of the Ashburton Rugby Union. The president of the Union (Mr N. Robilliard), in presenting private McKenzie .with a pipe, paid a tribute to his good work for Rugby football in the County.

Mr J. Brown, who will leave tomorrow for Motueka, was met lastevening by members of the Ashburton Catholic Club, of which lie was one time president, and' on their behalf Father G. Daly presented him with a firescreen in recognition of his active interest in the work of the club. Opportunity was taken to make a presentation on behalf of the Ashburton County Debating Union, the president of which, (Mr Hardic Silcock) handed an inkstand to Mr Brown, who frequently acted as judge of debates conducted' by the Union.

An illuminated address was presented to Miss E. Andrews at a function held in the Baring Square Methodist Schoolroom last evening, in recognition of her long association with- the Sunday School, 25 years of which she was Sunday School Visitor. The pre sentation was made by the Rev. Angus Mcßean, who referred to Miss Andrews’s untiring work in the interests of the Sunday School, and paid tribute to the valued work of the Andrews family in church affairs over more than half a century. The address was signed by Mr Mcßean, Messrs N. J. Hosking (Sunday School Superintendent) and C. S. Hawkey (secretary).
