PATRIOTIC APPEAL.

CANTERBURY TOTAL IS £84,000. OF QUOTA OF £150,000. “Unfortunately, Canterbury’s quota of £150,000 for the Million Pounds Appeal is not yet in sight, only £84,000 being in Hand,” said My H. J. Orothers, in a report to the Ashburton County Council to-day on a- meeting of the executive of the, Canterbury provincial Patriotic Council. “As the money will all ibe required to carry on with to the end of the. year, the appeal has been extended to May 31, and all districts are expected to raise their quotas. “The .receipts since November, 1939, amount to £121,147 10s lOd, and the expenditure £31,106 15s, leaving a credit balance of £89,980 15s lOd. Hie sum of £57,00 has' been invested, of which £25,000 lias been set aside for rehabilitation. Our share of the overseas expenditure is £22,800, which is to be met out of the above credit, and we rniist remit £9148 10s 8d received for the London Relief Fund. Other commitments are heavy, and will increase from time to time to provide for ou(r ever expanding forces'of the Army, Navy, Air Force, merchant seamen and Territorials. “Reports from overseas indicate that Christmas parceds forwarded by the patriotic committees arrived safely, and that practically every man. received a parcel. A few men who were absent on desert patrol were missed at the time, but received parcels on their return.”
