SINGING COMPETITION.

ASHBURTON HIGH SCHOOL.

RECORD ENTRIES RECEIVED. The competition in solo singing which is held each year among boys and girls of the Ashburton High School for the special award given by Mr R. Kennedy has been completed, and the results are as follows:

Girls’ Contest —Maureen Black, 169 pomts, 1; Noelene Parsons, 165 points, 2; Dorothy Ferrier, 161 points, _ 3. Boys’ Contest —John Pooley, 159 points, 1; Ross Valentine, 156 points, 2. The winner in the girls’ contest sang “Trees” as the test, and chose “Orpheus with his Lute” as her own selection. Tire runner-up gave the same test, but her own selection was. “0 Divine Redeemer.”

In the boys’ section., the winner sang “Goodbye” i(from the musical play “Whitje Horse Inn), and “Garden of Happiness.” Commenting on the contests, Mr L. J. Watt, who adjudicated, noted a definite improvement in the quality of the work, particularly in the own choice of the girls’ section whiere some quite ambitious songs were attempted with very good results. The winners in both sections owed their success to their accuracy and attention to all finer points of rendition, and he commended this point to all competitors for their future guidance. Record entries were received this year, and the competition is now firmly established as part of the school curriculum.
