THE HOME GUARD.
ENROLMENTS IN ASHBURTON.
FIRST PARADE TO-MORROW. Interest in the Ashburton Company of the Home Guard is growing rapidly and enrolments continue to come in steadily. Up to this morning there had been 123.
Mr E. H. Orr, who held the rank of major during the last war, has been recommended as company commander of the Guard for Ashburton.
The company will make its first appearance to-morrow evening, when- a parade will be held at the Ashburton Drill Hall. Members will be sworn-in and arm badges will be issued. These are of stout material bearing' in rod lettering the initials “H.G.,” surmounted by a crown. The question of the wearing of these arm bands has raised a point as' to whether they should be worn only at parades or during the whole time the holder is a member of the Guard. The point will probably he decided in consultation between the members, the officers and the Homo Guard Committee.
THE HINDS COMMITTEE.
LOCAL COMMANDER SELECTED,
Mr D. J. McDonald (Lieutenant McDonald) was recommended as local commander at a meeting of the Hinds Home Guard Committee. Mr C. W. Keeley (convenor) presidled. Mr H. C. B. Withell was appointed chairman'of the Hinds District Committee and Mr K. J. Mackenzie secretary. Several new members were sworn in and a number of enrolment forms were taken away to be filled in arid returned by the next meeting of the committee, to' he held on Tuesday, December 3.
