FORTY ENROLMENTS.
THE HOME GUARD MOVEMENT. ENTHUSIASM AT RAKAIA. ' One of this most enthusiastic Home Guard meetings in the County was held at Ilakaia last evening, when about 40 persons were sworn in as members of the organisation. Mr L. 0. Oakley was chairman of the meeting. Addresses were given by the County Clerk (Mr G. Kelly) and the Area Commander (Captain E. A. Cockroft) and a number of questions were asked and! the position in regard to • these clarified. It was unanimously decided to form a committee and to canvass the district for members of the Guard. The committee was elected as follows: —Wing-Commander W. L. Harrison, Messrs B. McNamara, C. McKcgney, F. Colgan, E. Quinn, T. G. Hardy, W. J. Lee, S. Wright, J. S. Connelly, H. C. Nelson, A. Doig and T. Y. Wilkinson.
At the conclusion of the meeting it was decided that Wing-Commander Harrison be recommended as local commander. Sub-committees were set up to conduct meetings in the district and foster interest in the Guard to the greatest extent. It was also decided that a recruiting stand should be situated on the grounds at the patriotic sports gathering on Monday. At tlie request of the residents of the Rangitata district near the Public Wojrks camp, the Ashburton County Council has decided to hold a meeting in the< Public Works Hall at Clement’s Corner on Wednesday evening. A similar meeting will be held at Mayfield on Thursday. ,
