PRIMARY PRODUCTION
THE MID-CANTERBURY COUNCIL.
MR H. C. B. WITHELL CHAIRMAN
Mr H. C. B. Withell was elected chairman in place of Mr C. A. Campion, who has resigned, at a meeting of the Mid-Canterbury Primary Production Council last evening.
Mr Withell appealed for the co-oper-ation of members to make the Mid-Can-terbury Council one of the best in New Zealand.
lii accepting Mr Campion’s resignation it was decided to thank him for his services. The opinion was expressed that Mr Campion had gone the wrong way about resigning in giving wide publicity to the question. It was stated that it seemed that an attempt was being made to make political capital out of the matter. He might have called a meeting at which his contentions would have been considered. In regard to over-production of oats, it was stated that any surplus could be held over. If a guaranteed price was required for all commodities, farmers might as well hand their properties over to the Government.
The Director of Primary Production (Mr R. B. Tennant) advised that the question of the standardisation of the 42-ineli wool-pack would be considered at the next meeting of the National Council. The chairman said that most farmers already had 42-inch packs. In connection with lime, the chairman said that what was required was up-to-date lime works in the Ashburton County. A proposal for the opening of lime works at Staveley was considered in committee.
The National Council wrote inquiring regarding what the Council had already done and what its plans were for the future.
