Regret at the death of Dr. S. P. McCallum was expressed in a resolution passed by the Canterbury Education) Board yesterday.

Private A. MaoLachlan was presented with a fountain pen by Superintendent H. Hefford, on behalf of the Ashburton St. John Ambulance Brigade, at the close of a practice the other evening.

As a: mark of respect to the late Dr. G. I. Miller, members of the Mid-Can-terbury Executive of the Farmers’ Union stood in silence at their meeting yesterday afternoon. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of Dr. Miller, the board’s representative on the Ashburton High School Board, and of appreciation of his valuable services to education, was passed by the Canterbury Education Board yesterday. A resolution of sympathy was carried by the Christchurch City Council last levelling. Similar resolutions were carried by the Ashburton Women’s Institute, St. John Ambulance Brigade, and Mid-Canterbury Centre of the Red Cross Society.

Leading Aircraftman Morvyn W. F. Petrie, younger son of Mrs G. Turner, of Grey Street, Ashburton, and the late Mr Thomas W. Petrie, of Tinwald, was successful in his examination as an air gunner at the Levin Training School and has. been recommended for a commission. He has left for further training, overseas. He is a former pupil of the Ashburton East and Technical Schools. Before leaving New Zealand he spent a few days at Hanmer Springs, where he had been apprenticed to the bakery trade. There he was,the recipient of a number of gifts from individuals and public bodies. The Hanmer Springs Volunteer Fire Brigade, of which, fie was foreman, presented him with a Conway Stewart fountain pen. His brother, Alan M. Petrie, of the permanent staff of the R.N.Z.A., is stationed at a coastal position with the rank of aet-in.g-hattery sergeant-major.
