RECORDS WANTED.
THE TAKINGS OF FISH. AN APPEAL TO ANGLERS. The monthly meeting of the Council of the Ashburton Acclimatisation Society was held last evening, when Mr J. Bonn (chairman) presided. The chairman reported that a suitable side-chair had been purchased for the ranger’s motor-cycle, and was already proving a saving in running costs as against the use of motor-cars for various purposes. The South Island 'Council advised that the annual conference of societies would be held at Christchurch at the end of November.
A letter was received from Mr D. P. ITobbs, Biologist at the Fisheries Laboratorv of the Marine Department, asking if the Society could forward summaries of as many anglers’ diaries as possible, covering the x-ecords of bags in any seasons from 1930-31 onwards. It was decided to endeavour to obtain seasonal records from anglers in the district who were able to supply them. The chairman added that he hoped that anglers who had kept such records would place them in the hands of the secretary (Mr J. B. Nicoll). The ranger’s report for the month stated that the following liberations of fry, covering the whole hatching season, had been completed:— Lake Clearwater, 75,000 brown trout; Lake Emma. 40,000 brown trout ; Lake Heron, 23,000 brown trout; Lake Camp, 25,000 rainbow trout. In addition, 30,000 brown trout fry had been liberated in the Hinds River. 40,000 in the Rangitata, 10,000 in the Rakaia and about 200,000 in the Ashburton. Seventy-five thousand brown trout eyed ova bad also been planted in a creek flowing into the Ashburton River.
The report also stated that arrangements were being made to shoot out the shag rookeries in the Rangitata Gorge.
