THE HOME GUARD
FEW MORE ENROLMENTS. EXAMPLE OF THE COUNTRY. THE ASHBURTON COMMITTEE. The roll of the Home Guard in Ashburton stands at nine to-day, four more members having enrolled since yesterday. At the rate at which members were being enrolled in the country areas, Ashburton Borough should have 500 on its strength, stated the Area Commander (Captain E. A, Cockroft) at a meeting of the committee last evening. Mr W. B. Thomas said he thought that not enough people understood yet what the Home Guard stood for. Advice was received from the Director of National Service (Mr J. S. Hunter) that Messrs R. Sinel and C. J. Hay, organisers for the Home Guard, who would be touring the South Island, would visit Ashburton to meet the committee at 10 a.m. on Monday.
It was left to the Deputy-Mayor (Dr. J. Connor), who presided, and Captain Cockroft, to call a public meeting, after seeing the organisers, and to arrange for speakers at the meeting. The offer of Mr David Smith to keep the records of the committee until «. permanent secretary was appointed was accepted.
