THE COUNTY PATRIOTIC FUND.
ACTIVITIES OF COMMITTEES. The Ashburton County fund, in the Dominion-wide appeal for £1,000,000 for patriotic purposes, reached £llß2 Is 9d to-day.
Reports from all parts of the County show that committees are functioning at top speed, and every effort is being made to make the County’s contribution a worthy one. An indication of the thoroughness of the organisation of the County for patriotic purposes was shown at a combined meeting of the Eiffelton, Waterton, and Willowby committees at Eiffelton on Tuesday evening. Every member of the three committees was present. Representatives were also in attendance from the Flemington and Huntingdon districts. The purpose of the meeting was to report progress in the appeal. Lists presented showed that £550 had been raised. It was stated that a number of people had declined to contribute for various reasons, but the opinion was expressed that a number who could well contribute would probably realise their responsibilities to the fighting forces.
The Rakaia Patriotic Committee is showing itself to be an extremely live body, and is setting an example to other parts of the district. In conjunction with’the Athletic and Cycling Club, it is planned to hold a big effort on the King’s Birthday holiday. A community sing is also being arranged for Tuesday, November 19. The songleader will be “Jaeko” (Mr Jack Maybury), of the commercial broadcasting station 3ZB, and he .will be assisted by other 3ZB artists.
