NOTHING DEFINITE.

GLASSWORKS AS STARCH FACTORY. STATEMENT BY DIRECTOR, Addressing a meeting of potatogrowers at Waimate last Saturday evening Mr E. T. Cox, of Dunediu, who is endeavouring to bring about the formation of a company for the extraction of starch from potatoes, stated that the promoters had under offer as a factory, the buildings just north of Ashburton, formerly occupied by the Southern Cross Glass Company. A director of the glass company told a “Guardian” reporter this morning that nothing definite had been done in the matter. Should tho building have been placed at the disposal of the proposed company the directors would have been consulted and this had not been done. Mr Cox’s statement at Waimate was the first that lie had heard of an offer being made. He stated, however, that some of those interested in the proposed industry had been permitted to inspect the building. The Qounty Council engineer (Mr H. A. Yezey) stated to-day that representations had been made to the Borough and County Councils by the promoters for tho provision of an adequate water supply at the glassworks. The' Councils were investigating the position. It was stated that to give a sufficient supply the existing water race running near tho works would liaye to be widened.
