MILKING SHORTHORNS

THE CANTERBURY BRANCH. MEETING IN ASHBURTON. The first meeting in Ashburton of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Milking Shorthorn Association was held in the Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s room this afternoon, the president (Mr W- Barnett) presiding. A report on the proceedings of the last annual conference was presented by the secretary (Mr G. E. Munning). Allocations of special prize-money included £2 to the Ashburton Show and £1 each to the Mayfield and Methven Shows. Mr R. J. Edgar was congratulated on his election as a vice-president of the New Zealand Association. The Association having complained that no valid reason had been given for the rejection of the branch’s choice of a judge for the Christchurch Show, the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association wrote that while it welcomed recommendations of breed societies regarding the choice of judges, it maintained that it must have the last word in this respect. The president said he understood that this year’s recommended judge had also been “turned down.”'* A member: Well, what is the good of us making recomihendations ? It was stated that the A. and P. Association had already met and appointed its judge by the time the branch’s letter reached the show officials. Mr Goodwin said he did not think any harm had been done, and while the branch had a right to continue the discussion, he was rather surprised that it was doing so. Mr G. H. B. Lill said the A. and P. Association had the final say, and the question should be dropped. It was agreed that no .further action he taken.

It was decided to replace the cup (won outright) for hull and three female progeny, the new trophy to have a competitive life of five years. A sum of £5 7s was subscribed in the room toward the trophy.

A motion of loyalty to the King and the Empire was carried, members standing at attention.
